4/15/18 review of Denver Post article and my own thoughts on art and appropriation

Here is the link to my April 15, 2018, Twitter thread reaction to a Denver Post article by Ray Rinaldi about a show by Diego Rodriguez-Warner at the MCA Denver.

The thread also includes a lot of my own collages, as I consider things like what art appropriation mean to me as I make my work.

Twitter's platform has twisted each of my threads through 2018 and 2019 out of chronological order. This thread is affected, but still mostly coherent. My apologies.

Thank you for reading. Please enjoy.

2/6/18 open letter to MCA Denver and MOCA Los Angeles about Arthur Jafa

Here is the link to a Twitter thread that is a kind of "open letter" to both the Museum of Contemporary Art, Denver, and the Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles.

The thread relates to Arthur Jafa's video Love Is the Message, the Message Is Death, which both MCA Denver and MOCA Los Angeles screened. The "open letter" was mostly to ask if any discussions had been held comparing Jafa's work with the work of Stan Brakhage and Mickalene Thomas, and my reasons for asking.

As you'll notice in the thread, this led to a brief email interaction between myself and one of MCA Denver's curator. The interaction didn't go anywhere. And it wasn't meant to. I was hoping to see what sort of conversations I might generate directly via Twitter with folks. But no conversations were generated, unfortunately.

2/7/18 review of three solo shows at MCA Denver

Here is the link to my Twitter thread review of three solo shows at the Museum of Contemporary Art Denver.

The three shows are: Love Is the Message, the Message Is Death, by Arthur Jafa; Honestly Lying, by Diego Rodriguez-Warner; and Shadows of Men, by Cleon Peterson.

The thread gives a summary and some background and technical discussion on each show. It also gives a good amount of pictures from each show.

5/8/17 review of MCA Denver African Diaspora in the Americas project launch

Here is the link to my Twitter thread review of a May, 2017, event at the Museum of Contemporary Art, Denver, to launch the African Diaspora in the Americas project.

The thread discusses how this project was part of the Biennial of the Americas, and it gives some background on that. The thread discusses and gives pictures of work presented by Cleo Parker Robinson Dance to celebrate the project. And it shows some art I saw while at the MCA Denver that day, including work by Jean-Michel Basquiat and Sierra Barela.

Here is the link to the MCA Denver's website.

5/17/15 review of MCA Denver's Thief Among Thieves and Kim Dorland exhibits

Here is the link to my Twitter thread review of the Thief Among Thieves and Kim Dorland exhibits at the Museum of Contemporary Art Denver.

My Twitter thread review gives some details on the shows. It discusses my then-budding interest in the uses of and emphasis on technique in contemporary art. It discusses the work of Shannon Ebner but doesn't show photographs. It gives photos of the works of Zach Reini, Raqib Shaw, Matthew Brandt, Amber Cobb, Amanda Ross-Ho, Ed Fornieles, and Kim Dorland.

3/3/13 review of MCA Denver shows by Karen Kilimnik and Patti Hallock

(Image: Karen Kilimnik work at MCA Denver)

Here is my March 3, 2013, Twitter thread about two solo shows at the Museum of Contemporary Art Denver: Dance Rehearsal: Karen Kilimnik's World of Ballet and Theatre, and Patti Hallock: West Is Here.

Unlike my later Twitter reviews, this review was not posted as one thread. Instead, I posted each tweet separately.

The tweets are below for your convenience.

***

Tweet 1. Today I went to the @mcadenver Museum of Contemporary Art Denver. A nice museum right on the edge of Downtown Denver.

T2. At @mcadenver I went to the exhibits of work by @pattihallock & Karen Kilimnik. I think today was the last day of Hallock's exhibit.

T3. Karen Kilimnik's work is on at @mcadenver through late June. The work, drawings, paintings, and video, focuses on the ballet.

As you can see, this is a pretty simplistic review. But I am pretty sure it's my first review of a show at the MCA Denver.

My first Twitter reaction to the MCA Denver was to the tweet below, which links to a video tribute to Jake Adam York. The MCA Denver posted this tweet on January 27, 2013.

While my response was genuine and respectful, I don't think it was as somber as the occasion called for.

MCA Denver. A video tribute to our friend Jake Adam York. The best speaker on bourbon, bbq or poetry there ever was or will be.

Me. @mcadenver Awesome. The "perfect mint julep" speech was great.

11/9/14 review of MCA Denver show Myopia, by Mark Mothersbaugh

Here is a link to my Twitter thread review of the Museum of Contemporary Art show Myopia, by Mark Mothersbaugh.

This thread compares the MCA Denver's show to a previous show they'd done by Bruce Conner. It talks a bit about how DEVO influenced me. And it gives a bit of insight into my own fetish-based opinions about Mothersbaugh's works.

The MCA Denver has a page documenting the 2014 Myopia exhibit. You can find it here.

Also, you can see Mothersbaugh's visual art at his Mutato Visual website.
